There are so many new words out there these days I thought I would create one of my own. With mompreneur, uber-family, blogosphere and frienemy now part of our every day conversation, it got me thinking that if spoken enough, I too could add to the plethora of new definitions describing our ever changing world.

As a mom to the newest generation, I am constantly on the move with my kids. Gymnastics, swimming, floor hockey, music class, play dates and preschool are just a few of the things on my list each and every week. On top of that, we add trips the library, the traveling carnival, gramma’s house, the mall, the local farm, children’s festivals, craft shows, kite flying expositions, the beach, museums, and any other seasonal activity geared towards kids as their weekends events.

From one class I depart for the other, going from school to swimming to ice hockey isn’t out of the ordinary. My children seem to have more on their schedule than I do. My husband and I are forever mapping out their activities and planning just where we need to be and when. If they have nothing planned, which is rare, then I take then with me when I go to the bank, the dry cleaners, the paint shop, for an oil change and even dropping off someone at the airport.

All this moving and going, activities and action brought on the conception of my new word, Mobile Child. A new breed of kids constantly on the go. From the moment of birth, it seems they are rushed into life and quickly on the move. My friend had a baby two weeks ago at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon, and was home with baby e-mailing her friends that evening. Shocked the hospital let her out so early, she and her little one were into the hustle and bustle of life faster than we ever were.

Everywhere you look, kids are traveling with their parents in carriers or slings, going places in strollers and bikes. The family car is jammed with car seats and booster chairs, all to accommodate children who are one-hundred percent “mobile”. Ten years ago in North America, you never saw kids strapped to their moms while shopping or exercising.  The terms pre-kindergarten, waterbabies, and Gymboree didn’t exist as kids were home, watching Sesame Street with their siblings. Now a family of three is a schedule-juggling phenomenon with one going here and the other two in classes across town.

The term mobile child isn’t meant to be considered negative or derogatory. In fact, it reflects a busy lifestyle of kids with their healthy desire to do, learn, and be more involved. It describes their amazing ability to adapt to our fast-paced and technological lifestyles. It opens their minds, gives them experiences and shows them things that we as children never got to see.

It is my thought that the mobile child is a healthy new class of kids who will be more interested and aware. They will love to travel, explore and finds ways to entice their curiosities and carry out their dreams. No longer bound by their surroundings, these are the next generation of movers and shakers, doers and thinkers, creators and innovators. Kids on the move in this mobile world.
