With all the crawling, kicking, running, jumping, and skipping that our lil’ tots do, it’s not surprising that their bodies need a whole lot of H20 to keep up. The more water they drink now, the less likely they will turn up their noses to it when they’re a bit older and aware of the tantalizing, sugary beverages out there. In the name of health, guzzle guzzle guzzle!
So you slipped up a bit and had second and err…third servings of Aunt Sally’s infamous caramel pecan pumpkin pie. Once during Thanksgiving and again on Christmas Eve. As you took bite after bite of its unctuous filling, crunchy topping, and toasty crust, you said to yourself, “What? It’s the holidays!” – a sentiment we ourselves echoed as we bit into our hot-out-of-the-oven ginger molasses cookies. No matter how hard we try to stay on track, it’s not easy to resist all the delicious food that presents itself during the holidays. And it’s quite the slippery icing-covered slope.
Don’t fret. That’s what new years are for, right? After all, every orbit of the Earth around the Sun brings us a set of new resolutions, new diets, new studying habits, new lifestyles, new cleaning routines, new attitudes, and new just-about-anything-you-want-it-to-be.
Winter vacation is out in full force right now so it seems logical that kids are trying to squeeze in as much fun and play time as possible before school resumes on the 4th. Between play dates, cartoon marathons, family game nights, and the occasional trip to the snowy mountains, we actually find ourselves missing school and hanging out with all our friends. All this free time has got us wondering, what does everyone else do with their time off from school?
A year has come and gone and it’s a pretty carefree walk down memory lane pinpointing the highs and lows and dos and don’ts of 2009. Hindsight is, after all, the wiser, jaded cousin of foresight. So it may not be as simple to ask yourself whether you’ve fulfilled those resolutions you made last New Year’s Eve during your state of tryptophan-induced holidaze.
We get it. It’s hard to worry about training for that marathon you’ve always wanted to run or getting some weekly ‘you’ time at the spa (even if it’s your bathroom) when lil’ Sally’s finger painting a mural to match the size of the Sistene Chapel…on your kitchen wall. It’s debatable whether the New Year will be twenty-ten or two-thousand-and-ten, but one thing’s for sure: this New Year’s resolutions will still be hard to keep.

The tree’s looking a little disheveled, the lights are getting droopy, and the wreath’s swaying back and forth on its final remaining nail. The trash is full of crumpled wrapping paper, jagged remnants of tape are stuck on the carpet, and silver tinsel is poking out from the crevice between the sofa cushions. Finally, for the first time in what seems like months, you let out a big sigh of relief. Freedom at last, you think to yourself. You pick up the stack of Christmas cards compliments of Grandma, your college roommate, old neighbour, etc. to file in the drawer and to your horror, discover the freshly-packed box of thank-you cards that you picked up when you were Christmas shopping. The glare of the shiny cellophane and fancy calligraphy mocks you. You get ready to start cursing your own preparedness until you remember reading something on some blog somewhere about websites that offer e-cards that are cheap or free with an annual subscription! The flights have been booked for months and the last minute arrangements for airport pick-ups have just been made; the relatives are coming.
The house has been cleaned from the attic to the dry cellar. The holiday decorations are up and lit. The pets are outside, where they will remain until Lillian leaves. The hor d’oeuvres are cooked and plated.

With the winter Olympics less than 2 months away (yes, we’re already counting down!), our heads are wrapped up in thoughts about all the winter sports that will be showcased. Favorites like snowboarding, lugeing, and figure skating, which will surely have us glued to the TV, come February.
