Christmas Crafts for Kids

December 19th, 2010

Christmas Holidays are here, and you know what that means… The kids are out of school and Family fun begins.. We all enjoy this time of year especially the kids, but it can be so exhausting for us Parents with Shopping, baking, wrapping, cooking etc… And on top of that  entertaining our kids through-out  the holidays. I know I hear on a daily basis “Mom, I am bored” or “Is it Christmas yet?” !

Today I decided that I wanted to do something creative and fun with my Kids, So I broke out the crafts! We painted, Glittered , Baked and cut our little hearts out! It was such a great day and the Quality  family time that we cherished for a couple hours without the endless Questions.

All these Crafts are great for any ages, but remember always use safety with sharp Utensils and heated objects.

Enjoy!

Reindeer Hand-print/Footprint Craft

What you need:

  • wiggly eyes or dot stickers,
  • a red pom pom nose or red dot sticker,
  • colour template nose in with red sparkle glue,
  • a red felt mouth,
  • a real ribbon or little bells to decorate.
  • Poster Board  and Scissors

To make the head, do one of the following:

  • Trace one of the child’s feet on brown paper, craft foam or posterboard,
  • Trace one of the child’s feet on white paper and allow child to paint or colour in,

To make the antlers, do one of the following:

  • Trace each of the child’s hands on brown or beige paper, craft foam or posterboard,
  • Trace each of the child’s hands on white paper and allow child to paint or colour in,

Tips:

  • When making the antlers, spread the thumb as far from the other fingers as possible.
  • Assemble the reindeer (glue antlers and face to head and put ribbon or other decoration on the bottom).
  • You can also add the child’s name and the year.
  • Add a string/ribbon if you wish to hang on the tree.
  • You can also use it as a lovely personalized gift tag guaranteed to bring smiles.

Christmas Play-Dough (Glittery)

What you Need:

  • 1 cup plain (all-purpose) flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water with food coloring added
  • Glitter

Put all the ingredients into a large saucepan, and stir over a medium heat until the dough forms into a ball. Allow to cool, and then knead until smooth.

Store in an airtight container (a Ziploc bag with the air pressed out is good).

Christmas Ornaments made from Dough

What you Need:

  • ½ cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup water
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie sheet
  • Toothpick
  • Miniature cookie cutters: star and Christmas tree
  • Acrylic paints: green, yellow, and various colors of your choice for tree ornaments
  • Glitter glue or glitter paint
  • ribbon
How to make it:
  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Mix together, salt, flour, and water until dough is formed.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour, continue to do so until stickiness is gone. Do not add too much flour, this will dry out the dough and will cause it to crack before you get a chance to bake it.
  4. Roll out the dough to about ¼” thick with a rolling pin that has been dusted with flour.
  5. Use cookie cutters to cut out as many trees and stars as you want.
  6. Use a toothpick to make a hole toward the top of the shape. Poke the toothpick into the shape, then holding toothpick straight up and down, make a circular motion as if you were stirring something. Keep circling until the hole is the size you want.
  7. Place all shapes onto an ungreased cookie sheet and place into the preheated oven.
  8. Bake for 2 hours.
  9. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
  10. Paint the trees green and the stars yellow.
  11. Use the handle end of the paint brush to dot on ornaments by dipping into paint then dotting onto ornament.
  12. When paint is dry, use glitter glue (we used green) or glitter paint (we used gold) to put a sparkling cover coat on your ornaments.
  13. When dry, thread ribbon through hole and tie in a knot in the back.
  14. Tie onto package.

Tips:

  • If your toppers are large enough, you can make two holes in each so that you can thread ribbon through like a button, only showing a small amount of ribbon on the front.
  • These make adorable pins to wear to school. Just don’t make a hole. Glue a pin back to the back of the completed ornament instead.
  • Uncooked salt dough doesn’t keep well, so only make enough dough for the ornaments you are going to make. If you are only making a few toppers, halve the ingredients above. The listed amounts will make enough ornaments for a classroom of 20.

Staying Active during the Holiday Season

December 8th, 2010

Staying active is one of the hardest tasks to do over the Holidays. With all the Turkey dinners ,Baked Goodies and all the time off the Kids get over the Holidays makes it for a busy time of year and we all forget about exercise. All it takes is 30 minutes a day to keep your weight gain under control. Not to mention exercise relieves stress and makes you feel better about yourself.

Let’s talk about  activities you can do with your kids over the Holiday season to keep the whole family active. These activities don’t have to be strenuous or exhausting. They can be fun and exciting and keeping the kids entertained all through the Holidays, even through rain or snow or Sunshine depending where you live.

Here’s My Top 10 Activities to Keep your family active:

  1. Build a Snowman – Depends on the Weather conditions-If you don’t have snow you can always make a leaf-man, Get some fill-able bags from your local Dollar-store that are colored White and be creative.
  2. Take a nature walk- It’s always nice to take a family walk , explore the nature around you.Maybe even a scavenger hunt
  3. Ice Skating- Kids love this. Make sure you are protected though for safety. Bumps and Bruises happen easy on the ice!
  4. Swimming- Who doesn’t like to get in from the cold and have a nice refreshing swim. They say swimming is the best exercise.
  5. Santa Claus Parade- This isn’t much exercise but it will sure bring a smile to your kids face! HO HO HO
  6. Nintendo Wii- I know we all like to keep our kids  away from video games, but some family games are fun and you can still stay active on a rainy day inside.
  7. Light festivals- Kids love lights , and walking around is sure to  get your family some exercise !
  8. Skiing/Snowshoeing- This is awesome exercise and fun too.
  9. Community Centers- Local Community centers usually have festive games and events all through the Holidays.
  10. Museum/Science Centers- Walking around and looking at the different exhibits is good exercise, not only that but you can learn something new!

All these Ideas are great and not to pricey. So stay active this Holiday season and have fun!
